Did you know that Murano glass began in 1291. Worried that the roaring furnaces of glassmakers would set Venice’s wooden buildings ablaze, the Venetian Republic ordered all glass artisans to move to the nearby island of Murano.
What began as a safety measure quickly turned into an elite guild. To protect their trade secrets, glassmakers were forbidden from leaving Venice under penalty of death.
